Saunook Community Has a Permanent Home to Expand Vital Programs
The Saunook Community Organization, a vibrant 501(c)(3) non-profit, is on a mission to enhance the quality of life for local residents. Despite its rich history and recent recognition with the WNC Communities' Trillium Award, the organization faces a critical challenge: the lack of a permanent community center.
For years, Saunook's dedicated volunteers have coordinated an impressive array of programs. The community has rallied around fundraisers like spaghetti suppers and barbecues, demonstrating the strong spirit of volunteerism that defines Saunook.
However, the organization's growth and ability to serve have been hindered by its reliance on borrowed spaces. "We're grateful to the church and fire hall for their generosity," says a spokesperson, "but our community needs and deserves a permanent home to fully realize our potential."
A recent community meeting highlighted the desire for a dedicated space that could host:
- Educational programs and tutoring
- Cultural events celebrating Appalachian heritage
- Health and wellness seminars
- Small business incubation
- Gardening and cooking classes
- Arts and performance spaces
On October 1 the congregation of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church offered its Brotherhood Building so the Saunook Community Organization could expand its offerings, providing consistent support to residents of all ages and fostering a stronger sense of community cohesion. Saunook's commitment to preserving local history while building for the future is clear. Now, i the community will write its next chapter – one with a permanent home at its heart.
